Lily the Unicorn (All Ages, Hardcover)
Lily teaches young readers that the world is a fun, amazing place
I have been very fortunate in my life that I haven’t had to watch someone I love suffer through a long illness at the end of life – until the last year and a half. It makes you think about things like the quality of life, our health care system and having those you love around you is just as important as making those who are in their last days comfortable. As of many professions, I am always in awe of those who can care for those who are in their final days such as hospice care because it is exhausting to just witness the situation as a family member. I can see that dignity for the elderly and sick and dying is so important and it is nice to know there are so many out there who are undeniably making a huge positive difference in the last moments of someone’s life on earth and there is something very heart-warming about that.
And – you know what? I had a very fantastic experience with Dallas Clayton where he did something for someone on hospice that I knew through a friend in another experience. Yes, Dallas Clayton, the children’s author. Of this VERY book I’m about to review. That Dallas Clayton.
Here is an example of Dallas’s art work! Doesn’t it make you smile? He did one for my friend’s friend that said something like ‘Be Free’. I wish I had snapped a picture of it before I gave it to him! Oh well!
And, I made it happen by just asking him. Ummm…yup! Seriously.
But – Dallas might not remember. At least, he certainly didn’t want recognition and one that he wouldn’t even remember if someone asked him, ‘who did you do that for?’ because he just did something for someone who needed a lift-a light- in their final days. He sent a picture he drew to someone I knew because they were dying. And I asked. Shock! I couldn’t believe it either. Time has passed and so has the person, but I will never, ever forget what Mr. Clayton did just because. Does he know it made a difference? Does it matter in the scheme of things?
To me, yes, it did and it does.
We watch the media, we talk about the bad news…but there is much good in the world. That is always Dallas’s focus. I love that.
In Lily the Unicorn, his new book, Dallas explores a fun and adventurous unicorn who meets a hesitant Roger the penguin (I gotta make a little Scaredy Squirrel connection here which, of course, we love.) Can these two friends learn that the world is an awesome place by trying new things -now key in on this- together? As someone who feels like I can honestly say Dallas Clayton practices what he preaches of wanting to help others and make friends with all and because unicorns are just so darn cute, Lily paints the world as a brighter and happier place where I want to live with my hubby and kids. And darn it – Dallas – your goodness oozes from your pages without making me sick from the sweetness. How is that possible when you write a book about UNICORNS? What a breath of fresh air for the children’s section at our local library! Thank you and thank you for a friend who is no longer here to thank you himself.
I want to be part of a very awesome world where stories like this act of kindness are on the front pages of major newspapers because I think we need that reminder. So, that is why we should tell them. Tag. You are It, Readers!
