I think the most shocking and amazing thing to me as a new parent was how fast I could communicate and understand my oldest daughter even as a baby. She amazed me at her noises, gestures and pretty quick vocabulary that I rarely have had to second guess her in her short life. As I am going through this a second time with my youngest girl and she is already babbling and using tones to reflect her thoughts at six months and I found myself trying to make correlations. That is when I ran into this crumpled gem of paper I had shoved in my health records book for Brooke that said:
“Words Brooke Can Say for her 15th Month Pedi Appointment.”
It even included this little side gem reference; *Ones Brooke says the most, because –you know- her pedi might have cared about that! Ha. Wanna know what it said? Just for you, my readers, Brooke’s first words were:
1. Hi*
2. Mommy
3. Daddy
4. Baby*
5. Cat*
6. Bear
7. Bee*
8. Yeah*
9. That*
10. Cookie
11. Happy
12. Cracker
13. Book
14. Shoe
15. Me (ABC Song)
16. Baa (Sheep Sound)
17. Bye
18. Ball
I laughed as I read and thought two things; 1) I seriously doubt I will be writing up a list like this for Brie’s 15 month appointment and 2) Wow! Kids learn language SO FAST. Language acquisition is especially important and productive in a child’s first three years, but children benefit from language development and have a ‘sensitive’ period (see Montessori) occurs from birth to about age six.
I really love to work with and try out different language programs with Brooke to see which ones help her most and I am happy to say I have found a really great one called Dino Lingo. They have an excellent home education system for many different languages and since we are focusing on the country of Spain in our house at the moment we decided to try the Full Spanish set.
The Full Spanish Set!
I have done home school curricula with Brooke and find the ones that incorporate a variety of ways to learn are the most useful and the Dino Lingo program has a number of activities perfect for learning Spanish. While Brooke seems to learn the fastest through flash cards, she tends to get bored so the CD and coloring books were a great addition.
The DVDs provided a great resource for pronunciation and I like having visuals like the posters and progress charts around the house. While we are focusing on the country of Spain for our own family’s educational experience, it was nice to have the world map to look at all the different countries that speak Spanish! Wow! That helped show Brooke that languages are important and affect lots of different people so it is nice to be able to communicate through language.
The parent’s guide was easy to follow and this system can be used until the child can retain and speak the most common 200 Spanish words and phrases.
Great stuff!
