Brdi Do-It-Yourself Bird Feeder
The Fold-It-Yourself Feeder
If you think I am unique, you have yet to meet my only brother. He is older by eighteen months and although I have only seen him twice in 11 years, he still strikes me as just a very different person than myself while having so many of the same life experiences. We seem to even like a lot of the same things, too. I do have fond memories of us learning and playing music together (we were even in a few bands together in high school.) I think one thing that has probably always connected us is that we do love to learn about all sorts of things; like little jacks o’ all trades as kids. It definitely followed us after we left home and he actually majored in history in college as his undergraduate. One thing that I remember fondly is that one of the many things we learned and loved to do as kids was to bird watch.
Yes, we voluntarily loved to bird watch as children and it seems to continue for me. As kids, my brother and I even read lots of books on the subject and learned bird calls. I think the age I was really into bird watching with him was around age 6-8 and yet I still remember many bird names and calls from SE Ohio. It was fun when I was later responsible for the administrative office of an endangered species oversight service here in Austin and got to learn about birds and go ‘birding’ around Austin! It was like how I remembered it when I was a kid and it again showed me the importance of these nature experiences early in life. It does follow you throughout your life.
My brother and his friend (and me – the ever tag-along as a youngster) would have the best views in a little village in SE Ohio which, if you think about the northern area of the Appalachian mountains it would give you a great window into that area, and we learned them all. What wonderful memories! We made all kinds of fun feeders in order to entice the birds to a closer range to observe them. The excitement was sometimes too much as we waited in absolute silence. These are good memories and I imagine my brother remembers them, too.
I would have LOVED to have had the cool Brdi bird feeder back in the day and so glad you can purchase them now. This is such a fun family-friendly activity – perfect for preschoolers- that is eco-friendly and enjoyed by birds and humans alike. How could it be wrong? The Brdi Bird Feeder is an origami out of aluminum (which was super easy for Brooke to fold by herself) -at the beginner level- for our fine feathered friends. I liked that Brooke was able to make the bird feeder all by herself and loved doing the threading of the hanger.
I watched Brooke make this birdhouse before 8 am on a Sunday (my day off.) Ha ha. Tip: Do not tell your preschooler you are going to make a birdhouse in the morning……
The colors are fabulous and fun and the aluminum is able to withstand the elements. The Brdi website said that the feeder can hold up to ‘medium sized’ birds, so I guess you orthinologists could fill us in. I love that Brooke has been watching for the birds to come – and when they do – Yehaw! It’s great to read up about the different birds in Austin and we have been having fun discussing what bird’s eat (we are feeding them a trail mix blend) and even started talking about the different state birds of the United States! Fun.
