Malaysian-American International Youth Icon Award-winner releases first family music album
There are times that I may not be that interested in checking out a new album. Shock! Yes. I love, love, love music, but I get so disappointed when I hear a song that I just don’t like and I’m picky. I was in that ‘not another bad album’ mood on the morning when I finally decided to ‘bite the bullet’ and listen to ‘Nightlight’.
I looked at the CD cover. Sighed. Put the CD in my player (yes, some of us still use CDs) and listened.
As soon as I first heard Zee Avi’s very first song – a sweet cover of the lovely Bobby McFerrin’s Don’t Worry, Be Happy – it immediately made my day. I do not know how you can hear that song and not get a smile on your face (I’m eyeballing my husband, if you could see me now!) Yes, Zee Avi is adorable; like a Zoey Deschanel kind-of sweet. But, guess what? I love Zoey and now, I – oh, I mean we since Brooke does, too- love Zee.
Seriously, if my voice sounded like Zee, I would sing ALL the time.
Zee’s Nightlight album that releases April 15 is filled with beautiful and luscious covers such as Louis Armstrong’s “Dream A Little Dream”. I like her stripped down versions and ukulele chords (she plays a mean ukulele – and this is from someone who does try to play ukulele) and songs like “Rainbow Connection” and “Ben” (who doesn’t love a Michael Jackson cover?) make this album sweet and wonderful for families. This Malaysian musician is already a star in her native country, but I am sure she could easily be a household name in the U.S. soon! Already known throughout many musician circles and events (she played SXSW in 2009), Zee’s children’s album is sure to delight all who listen.
