How do wild animals react to the sizzling heat?

I honestly thought I loved the heat as a child in SE Ohio.  Then I moved to Texas.  Don’t get me wrong; the two seconds of winter seem to make up for the misery of the August sauna, but having survived two summer pregnancies in Austin have been hmmmm  (insert expletives!)  This included A/C, a fan and even ice packs to get me through a really rough September last year.  But what do the wild animals do?  Brooke laughed when I asked her, “do bears sleep inside to cool off in the heat?”  So, well, how do wild animals take care of themselves in the sizzling heat?

Beneath the Sun is a good for preschool to children in third grade to learn how animals survive the hot summer months.  Lovely Peachtree always incorporates learning and activities in the books and the book includes a lot of helpful hints on being a tracker to see animals in action (Shhh!  Just don’t let them see you.)  Children will learn how certain animals throw mud on their bodies to cool down, how animals can lose heat from various body parts and even animals that seek out shelter just like us humans!  It’s a fun and fascinating read and it is very nice to see this among Peachtree’s new books as we gear up for the hot months.
