It’s Not the Stork! (Hardcover, For Ages 4 and Up)
A Book about Girls, Boys, Babies, Bodies, Families, and Friends
I forgot which mom blog featured this children’s book as a great resource for the ‘where do babies come from’ talk for pre-k recently but I am very glad they did. Their review was fantastic and since this is an age-appropriate book for my oldest daughter I wanted to read it with her. While some concepts of our bodies may be a little over her head at this point, she was quite engaged with the book’s material and has asked me to read it again and, yes, again. Brooke now seems to have constant questions about boys and girls and families and, well, pretty much everything, and with my pregnancy with her little sister still fresh in her mind, she seems to nod knowingly when I read her this book. Using baby Brie as our example of a baby growing in a mom’s uterus was a nice way for her to grasp things like reproduction at her age level while being scientifically accurate. Yes, this book has cartoons and animals narrating, but the pictures of the body parts and the names of the body parts are anatomically correct and accurate.
Due to the topic of sexual health, Candlewick includes a message at the beginning of the book that says some parents will want to read It’s Not the Stork! cover-to-cover while some will want to pick and choose which parts to share with your child. I read the book cover-to-cover to Brooke and she seemed pretty interested and asked questions here and there, but was mostly concerned with ‘what should we call the baby?’ (Brooke decided we needed to name the picture of the baby growing in the womb, like Pickles or Jared being tossed around as potential names by her), so perhaps she only caught some of the book at this point. Ha! I thought this was a great introduction of sexual health and reproduction with preschoolers and I like that it included a chapter of ‘Okay Touches, Not Okay Touches’ on body safety. Great book!
