I Love You Just Enough (Hardcover) (Ages 6-10)
Knowing When To Let Go
The Gulf Coast oil spill in 2010 will forever be an event I will never forget. I was part of the US Fish & Wildlife team that dealt with the administrative side of the workers from our agency that helped with clean-up. There is a certain parental instinct that takes over when we see animals who need assistance. Mine has been deep rooted since childhood and I imagine most people who grow up around animals feel the same way. To be part of an effort to help animals during that tragedy was a little comforting. However, as nicely laid out in a new book by Sleeping Bear Press, we can only love the wild animals enough to rehabilitate and set them free. Saying goodbye is the hard part.
I Love You Just Enough is a book by a husband and wife team who have years of experience as licensed wildlife rehabilitators. This is their fifth book in the Hazel Ridge Farm series that focuses on the care of a young orphan chick that has been separated from its family. The young child, Heather, learns how to care for the chick and knows she will one day have to let the chick go. Does she love her just enough? This is a wonderful book to talk to kid’s about caring for animals and understanding the difference between pets and wild animals. It is also a gentle reminder to us parents that at some point in the future our children will be grown and will take flight from our nest, too. Sigh!
