I am going to cut to the chase here. While we love Dawn Publishing books because of their educational nature stories, there is a huge reason On Kiki’s Reef – a story of a sea turtle, Kiki, and her adventures in the water- has been popular in our household. As Bob says, “Toilet humor kills in kindergarten.” Bob would know, his kindergarten report card reads like you would imagine a class clown’s would. As Brooke is racing towards starting kindergarten (yikes!) , she has developed quite a funny personality and is very good at making and understanding jokes. Just as she found it funny when we read about honey being ‘bee barf’, she thought that parrotfish ‘making’ white coral sand in the tropic and sub-tropic oceans hilarious. In particular, these lines are fascinating to a preschooler:
Every bit of reef it scoops
Turns to sand when it poops
The map in the back showing the map of the world with coral reef locations and teaching treasures in the back are a nice touch. When not talking about the parrotfish and their interesting ummmm digestive track, we talk about waterways and oceans of the world. Great book and lots of fun for children (and parents)! Makes you look at white coral sand (aka parrotfish ‘poop’) a little different, doesn’t it?
