The most physically demanding job I ever had was as a dishwasher at a fancy Italian restaurant. It was difficult to get jobs in southeastern Ohio on top of already being in a small college town where students and ‘townies’ scrambled for minimum wage employment, so I was happy to be able to land my third simultaneous job at Sylvia’s washing dishes. In between opening a deli in the mornings and working on campus in between my Econ classes, I would close a lot of nights at the ‘fancy’ restaurant across the street from my rental property outside of Ohio University. It is hilarious to think about now, but as the high-end professionals dined on chicken parm in the front of the eatery, ‘Spit Fire’ –my dishwasher friend- and I were drenched in steam and marinara while breaking down the stainless steel vats stained by red. I wore my only pair of black dress slacks and a white tee – required wear at the restaurant – that would look like a crumpled mess by the time I fell into bed. It was so loud in that back dish room area that most nights I could not hear what people said to me as I expertly used the spray hose to tackle pile after pile of stacked oozing china. I was known as ‘Fire Ball’ and while I eventually was promoted to prep cook, the memory of the hot steam in muggy Athens with no A/C in the summer still makes me feel a little flushed. As I have stated before, I am proud of my work history and ethic, but I definitely appreciate that I now get to play with sudsy dishes for fun with my daughter instead of for rent or college books!

Special Tip: Dipping BathBlocks in soap or shampoo suds increases their stick to tub walls and other blocks dramatically!
