Otter Out of Water (Hardcover) (Grades K-2)
But What If That Otter Jumps Out of the Water?
Bob and I play silly games with Brooke that she finds amusing. Preschoolers love order and predictability so it is hilarious when you do things out of the ordinary to make them laugh. One is this game where I’ll put my shirt on backwards or daddy will not have his shoes and socks and we ask Brooke before we leave the house, “Are we ready to go yet?” Brooke laughs and laughs and calls us ‘silly heads’. That is, until we feign as if we really are going out dressed different than normal. Uh oh! *Gasp* The horror! Don’t we all want to be – like everyone else? Right? For some reason, that game popped into my head as I read the new book from Sleeping Bear Press about an otter who leaves his watery home to Brooke.
In the new book, Otter Out of Water, Mr. Otter decides that he wants to go out of the water and follow two children home. Shocking! Otters are not supposed to do that! What would you do if an otter followed you home? This is a cute story that is relevant for young kids who experience new things and how they can react. There is also a great example at the end about what happens when you ignore a problem – it usually multiplies! Fun read.
