Bravelets started as a simple concept, to raise money for research and education for various support such as different types of cancers, substance abuse and many types of diseases. While Bravelets have several kinds of jewelry to wear to support yourself or a loved one, I really love their adjustable bracelets. If you are able to look down and see your Bravelet, the idea is that it will help you be brave during tough times. The Diabetes Research & Education Foundation Bravelet bracelet is a handmade, adjustable bracelet made of 316L stainless steel and a braided cord. A portion of the proceeds go to the Diabetes Foundation to help find a cure. I chose this particular Bravelet for my own selfish reason, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes and I am a candidate to inherit Type II Diabetes within five years. I have learned so much about diabetes and how the diagnosis rate has increased from 1.5 million in 1958 to 18.8 million in 2010 (considered epidemic proportions.)

I want to mention that I am not overweight and had no idea I would be a candidate for diabetes. Even during my blood draws for the 3-hour glucose test, the person taking my blood said there is no way I had diabetes – assuming because I am a small person. She was wrong. I failed all the blood draws even the first test. When your sugar level is already above 140 while fasting, that is not a good sign. I have adjusted my diet to cut out carbs and simple sugars whenever possible and cross my fingers that will be enough to combat the disease. Knowing how difficult and life altering blood sugar tests and strict diet changes were for me while pregnant, I am doing everything I can to make sure this isn’t permanent for me. There is much research that needs to be done on diabetes and, hopefully, one day a cure.
