The Unknown Can Be a Scary Place for a Squirrel
My daughter is a huge fan of Melanie Watt’s Scaredy Squirrel books by Kids Can Press. Basically, Scaredy stays up in his nut tree all day and night terrified of the unknown. He wants things to be predictable and he has a very regimented schedule. He never ventures down off the tree (think of the horror) until…one day…. Well, I’ll let you read the books with your kids yourself! It is totally worth it. I love it for one big reason. I can relate to Scaredy Squirrel. I understand his irrational fears and that is why Scaredy cracks me up. I love to laugh at his anxious personality which Brooke finds quite funny (my oldest – who has never met a stranger – sigh!) He may not be ready for lots of changes in his life, but some of us like to start with baby steps when conquering our fears. Merry Makers Inc has done it again by turning this wonderful children’s book to life in puppet form and Brooke couldn’t be happier. She has to have Scaredy when we read his books and there is always opportunities to talk about doing new and different things in our lives. It doesn’t need to be scary and, if you feel scared, that’s okay, too. You can still jump off that nut tree at least once a day!
P.S. Make sure to only play with Scaredy Squirrel when the baby is NOT sleeping. My oldest finds herself shrieking hilariously and waking up Brie, so you have been warned!
