What to Do When You’re Cranky & Blue {Paperback} (Juvenile Nonfiction)

A Guide for Kids

The first time I ever spoke to a counselor was in fourth grade.  My teacher panicked my mom and they were concerned because I seemed withdrawn.  I had just moved to a new city (well, a city…I lived in what they call a ‘village’ in Ohio before that) and was quiet and shy.  To be honest, I was always that way but it was probably more noticeable in a room full of crazy nine year olds in a brand new school.  I had grown up in a small place before and we all just knew each other.  However, I guess counseling is what you get when you sit quietly reading instead of bashing each other on the monkey bars at recess!  While the counseling itself was highly embarrassing since I would get pulled out of the ‘free time’ period to hang out in some weirdo’s office (sorry, she was weird and not helpful at all), one good came out of it.  I started acting in plays and I actually sought out a friend, if just for the sake of staying out of the counselor’s office.  I slowly acclimated myself but was honestly never a fan of the school system until college when I really started to come out of my shell.  It was those sensitivities that have me seek out books like this one from Free Spirit Publishing.  Giving children tools to help them through things like grief and major changes like moving is very important and parents may not always be equipped with what to do.

What to Do When You’re Cranky & Blue is a new guide for children who are feeling down.  The book starts off explaining how one might feel if they are down then talks about ways to combat it.  I love the section on grieving about things like when someone dies or leaves you.  There are even exercises for kids to do on how to cope when you are feeling stuck.  I learned quite a bit about techniques and ways to talk about things for future reference with my children.  The book also is great because it gives you the option of when to go to an expert to sort out your feelings.  Sometimes children and parents need a little extra help and psychological issues like depression or anxiety need professional attention.  Do not be afraid to use it!
