Hip Scarves for Belly Dancers of All Sizes
Did you know that Austin, TX has an Etsy shop that makes hip scarves for belly dancing for kids? Super cool. I’ve always wanted to learn how to belly dance since my hippy roommate was taking lessons in college. Of course, I lack a lot of coordination but that doesn’t stop me from having fun with my kiddos. This Middle-Eastern dance that is usually associated with torso movement has been around for a very long time.
There are three characteristics of belly dancing:
- Percussive movements – used to punctuate the music and accent a beat.
- Fluid movements – Flowing, sinuous movements where the body is in continuous motion.
- Shimmies, shivers and vibrations – Small, fast, continuous movements of the hips or ribcage.
I still have quite a bit to learn but I am having a blast with my daughter. There are plenty of lessons available nearby but we are sticking to YouTube videos now. I know I’ll get enough courage to take a class with my fearless daughter – just give me time. Hey, it is right around New Year’s Resolutions!
