Explore Gravity! With 25 Great Projects
Explaining a concept of an invisible force that is extremely powerful to a preschooler is a fun activity. We like to talk to our older daughter about basic scientific principles in a simple way even at this time. She may not get some of it but she does grasp the basic ideas and gets her thinking and asking really good questions about our world. I love doing little ‘Mr. Wizard’=esque things (younger kids, ‘google’ Mr. Wizard!) and Nomad Publishing has added a new book to their Explore Your World series on gravity and the projects on the subject are really great. Laying the groundwork to future science studies is huge to me since peeking early interest in asking questions and wanting to understand things through the scientific method keeps kids interested in learning the field. There were several activities we could do even now although most we will save until Brooke is older (hello, making a working model of a scale!), versus what we did (hello, weighing items on a scale!) that she loved. She is pretty fascinated by the concept of balance and getting things to balance on a child’s scale is a cool activity. We may even have to do a martial arts class at some point after reading about centering your body. Don’t forget to check out the anti-gravity chapter which talks about antigravity forces and how we use them. If you want to explore gravity with your youngster, this book is a great way to do it. You will have to get a little dirty and may get questions you will have to look up later for your little one with a few of the projects, but the idea of fostering a love of science is a great way to spend quality time with your child!
