Clean it, Fix it & Back to Play

My husband and I are in to safety and emergency kits.  His previous life as an Army medic and working in emergency rooms has opened my eyes to quick action and taking care of little cuts or bruises right away just in case they are more serious.  I have two quick stories for you; one not funny and one I find hilarious.  The first is recent and my mom’s father had an open wound on his toe.  Infection spread and he went to the hospital early enough they were able to tell it was the flesh eating virus (or is it bacteria?  I always forget…) although his leg had to be amputated.  Tragic and sad and yet I think of how many times I just let things heal over that maybe I should have gotten checked out.  So now the funny story!  I was at my other grandparents’ farm when I was little and hurt my arm.  I told my parents it really hurt and I couldn’t move it.  My dad, figuring I assume I was just being a whiny kid, told me to suck it up and ‘strengthen’ it up by passing around a ball.  I tried my best but kept dropping it and insisting I was seriously hurt.  Long story short, we had to drive a long way to the hospital (we were in the boondocks) and TWO of my wrist bones were completely broken and I got a cast immediately.  It just goes to show that even if you can’t see an injury, it could be internal!  Now basic care can only get you so far, but in an emergency situation it can save your life.  I like to encourage those to get first aid kits not only for on the go but also larger ones to keep in the home and vehicle for emergency situations for your whole family.

I was really excited to learn that me4Kidz now has a pediatrician-recommended basic first aid kit for babies.  When my older daughter was born, I got their Medibuddy First Aid Kits for kids for the cars and diaper bag which is geared towards kids slightly older, but still had things we needed like antiseptic wipes and bandages.  It worked out great, but it is so nice to know they came out with a 25 item kit just for babies for this go around!  I also like keeping those instant cold and heat packs on us for that reason and the Diaper Bag buddy is able to be re-stocked as you please.  If you know anyone who has a new baby or will be new parents, this kit would make a great stocking stuffer.  Stay safe, my readers!
