Songs That Introduce Kids to Coastal Ecology

I used to work with biologists and they are a different breed concerned about all the critters (even the endangered blind salamander like here in Austin). While I did not grow up on the coast, I did grow up along two rivers and was always concerned about the clean-up of the area. I was actually pictured in my senior yearbook in a volunteer clean-up around the parks and rivers! Sure there is a lot of science involved, but science can be fun and dirty! What kid wouldn’t want to study mud, right? With songs like, “Vulture Vomit” and “Turtle Girl”, this album that was created with the Georgia Sea Grant, Courtney Knight Gaines Foundation and Savannah Music is sure to delight any budding biologists. The album contains 14 songs in total that were almost all done live at the Savannah Music Festival. The DVD (which is worth it to get) has won both a Parents’ Choice and the National Parenting Publications (NAPPA) Award. While Roger is not a biologist, he is an Eagle Scout interested in the sciences and spent three (yes, THREE) years working on this project. Day spent time working with the University Georgia Marine Institute scientists and hanging out exploring Sapelo Island, a barrier island south of Savannah, GA where he gathered inspiration to create an exciting album for elementary children as part of the Georgia Sea Grant. This is a fun intro to coastal ecology for children and one that hopefully creates a lasting interest in our coasts.
