Families of the World Films are Excellent for Learning about People and Cultures Around the World

I have probably mentioned a time or a thousand about how I like teaching my older daughter about different countries around the world.  Our new daughter is being incorporated into our fun activities of dressing up and learning the culture and food and we are going to start with the countries that include the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World.  We decided to buy products related to the Ancient Wonders to Modern Times since we are already huge Families of the World Series fans, we decided to try the DVD on Egypt.  I know I was really excited to learn a little more about the modern families of Egypt and knew my girls would be, too.

The Families of the World Series already has 28 amazing titles under its belt and it is a great way for families to take a journey around the world to learn about other cultures from a child’s viewpoint.  In fact, the series is narrated by children and always focuses on two children’s families one from an urban location and one from a rural location to get the different perspectives.  There are limited cuts so it feels very real-world and it’s a nice way for children to see life as it happens in each country for children as young as five (plus a limited 30 minute viewing time – perfect).

The Families of Egypt DVD focuses on the story of two Muslim children, Yasmine and Hesham, where one lives in a rural and the other in an urban environment.  Yasmine, age seven, lives near Cairo where her father works for an international oil company and her mother manages one of the housing developments’ tennis clubs.  She goes to an international school where she speaks Arabic, French and English and has a pretty typical lifestyle children from the US would relate to such as going to birthday parties, to the grocery store and activities like ballet.  Hensham, age six, lives in Luxor (famous for the Valley of the Kings tombs) with his family.  His father helps restore tombs in the area and they are staying with his grandparents while his mother recuperates from giving birth to his younger brother.  They have a huge week long birthday celebration for his new sibling.  Prayer and hanging out on his family’s boat is also incorporated into the video.  This was a fascinating DVD for me as much as the rest of the family!
