Ruby’s Studio: The Safety Show takes a Modern, Empowering Approach to Kids Personal Safety

I admit I bought this for my older daughter as soon as I saw the e-mail that The Mother Company was putting out a new video about children’s safety.  My daughter does not know a stranger and I’ve been very diligent at talking to her about her personal safety and that she owns her own body.  I don’t want to scare her or make her paranoid, but I also know there are unfortunately people out there that do not have the best intentions and that it is important she knows how to handle any situation.  I’m not always sure my messages stick since she is just a preschooler, but I know some of it is clicking through actions and conversations.  If there is a product that will help me teach her empowering approaches to her safety above what I am doing than I want to try it.  Already a Ruby Studio fan (I’ve reviewed The Feelings Show!), I knew the production was going to be great and the lessons age-appropriate.  I was actually pretty blown away about the way that personal safety was taught in a straight forward and non-scary way and still getting the message across.  Called the ‘modern day Mr. Rogers’ Ruby has kids talking about their feelings in a group setting and through cartoons and puppets as well as the host, Ruby, that helps to narrate conversations with kids.

The DVD is broken down into four main Safety Categories:

  • Trust Your “Uh-Oh Feeling” – Kids are empowered to stay safe by trusting their instincts.
  • “Check First” – Children are encouraged to always “Check First” with a safe adult before going anywhere or doing anything unexpected.
  • “Get Smart About Getting Lost” – Instills confidence and reduces anxiety by giving kids easy tips on what to do if they ever get lost.
  • Be the “Boss of Your Body” – Offers children essential language and know-how to stand up for themselves in any situation.

The show’s curriculum was done through the approach of the child safety expert, Pattie Fitzgerald of Safely Ever After, Inc., which you can learn more about here.  Another tip is to watch this video with your child for discussions together.  It is a great video and you will find yourself nodding along to the message as well as realizing things you can do to reinforce the real empowerment about your own personal safety.  Highly recommended!
