Matador Hats

A Leader in the Halloween Industry

I know I’ve talked a lot about my country themed parties I throw the kids.  I think it is important to learn the history about different cultures and our next one is one of my favorites: Spain.  We like to dress up, eat the food and do lots of readings and music of the culture.  You can’t really learn about the history of Spain without talking about matadors.  Whether or not you disagree with the performance, it is quite a large part of the Spanish history which is why I had to talk about it for an upcoming Spain party we are doing for the kids.  Just a quick lesson, the term in Spain is actually torero, but as a matador de toros (killer of bulls), you can see how we call them matadors.  It is considered a performance art.  While back in the day (late 1800s/early 1900s) matadors were treated like pop stars while today, for obvious reasons, there is not a lot of coverage.  The matador hat is still quite famous for its flat top with two bulbs at the end that represent the bull’s horns (the top represents the bull’s eye).  It was first worn in the 19th century and is called the montera.  While traditionally hats are supposed to fit smugly on the matador hat, I don’t think the kids will mind while wearing the hats and having fun learning about the history of Spain!
