I ended up going to five different schools by high school and started taking college courses when I was fifteen, so I know what it feels like to walk into a room and not know anyone from a young age.  I am an introverted person and don’t mind being by myself but I was always taught that if you see someone sitting by themselves, you go up and say hi.  My parents not only talked the talk, my mom and dad (both past social workers and volunteers), walked the walk.  I witnessed my parents, especially my father who was the welfare (later called Job and Family services) director go up to dirty and homeless people on the streets all the time and treat them as best friends.  They all knew his name and he continued to do home calls throughout his career (which was not required of him).  He never talked to me about it, but I saw and learned from it.  It taught me that you include others and you are friendly because life is short and people are important.  To be honest, that is the only reason I ever had friends because it did not really bother me to ostracize myself from the group and people do get tired of being turned down when they ask you to join (oops).  I would run from groups I felt were ‘picking’ on others (man, isn’t middle school the worst for those behaviors!?!.  However, I made some really great friends over the years by doing my own scouting missions and I think that this is a learned behavior to care and include others.  I hope, hope, hope to pass that on to my daughters because bullying and excluding others does not end in the classroom (I have actually seen it play out worse at work) and I do not want them to be part of those cliques.  I like to support and talk to Brooke about these interpersonal skills not only because they will serve her well in her future but because it is not okay to exclude or hurt others because they are different.  I think that as the world gets smaller, this will only become an even greater skill to have and Sea Monster and the Bossy Fish may just be a great start to your own child’s development of kind treatment to all.

Sea Monster and the Bossy Fish is a great story about a Sea Monster trying to include a new fish in school so he did not feel alone.  Unfortunately, Bossy Fish likes being rude and starts to exclude and make fun of others in the classroom and even created a very exclusive club called the Fresh Fish Club.  Sea Monster sees how sad and hurt some of the fish are at being excluded and he is upset.  He decides to do something about it and starts his own club called the Friend Fish Club where anyone can join (yes, even Fresh Fish Club members!).  Since there were many more fish excluded than included in Bossy Fish’s club, it becomes an immediate success.  This book is not only beautifully illustrated, it has a beautiful message.  It can help younger children learn how to cope with a bully or even just learn how to be a good friend and the importance of inclusion.  Being kind is not a chore; it becomes a way of life if you practice this skill.  Two fins up for Mr. Sea Monster!
