Super Schnoz and the Gates of Smell {Hardcover} (Ages 8-12)
“Super Schnoz smells like a winner, especially for reluctant readers.” – Kirkus Reviews
We all have one (or more) features we can’t stand. I hated having curly hair growing up, a fact that my older brother used as a baiting device to pick on me. Even now I will rarely ever wear it curly and certainly never out of the house! Each side of my family has a feature they will talk up like the family ears, nose and eyes. You can’t escape the comparisons. My poor dad had ‘the nose’. His nose was feature on a cake by his ‘friends’ one year and it was literally the size of his entire head. He always laughed and joked with everyone about it who would point it out (he had broken it playing basketball when he was younger which made it worse) and I eventually learned how to make fun of myself and see things that I would consider blemishes as something to my advantage. My curly hair is beautiful even if I don’t particularly like it. I know someday I’ll stop caring to waste time to straighten it. Until then, it was really cute to read a book to my daughter about using what others would see as a weakness or flaw as a huge strength instead.
Super Schnoz and the Gates of Smell is the first in this new series of Andy Whiffler, age 11, a young boy with a nose so big he can use it to fly! He can also smell one hundred thousand times stronger than most humans. Andy moves and begins a new school and is picked on quite a bit because of his big ‘schnoz’. However, the children soon learn that Andy and his alter ego, Super Schnoz, can save the entire summer vacation by sniffing out toxic chemicals seeping into the air by a local ‘environmental’ company. The nose knows and is soon known as a super hero among his classmates instead of a super nose. Now that smells like a winner and what a great lesson for us all!
