MommyCon Austin: Modern Moms Want Modern Advice Boutique-Style!
This isn’t my first time around as a mom and yet I was still intrigued to check out MommyCon, a conference that has been sweeping parts of the country and organized by bloggers to help give direction to first time moms in all things baby. Austin was one of the lucky cities to host their one-day ‘mini’ conference at the Palmer Center and the agenda included everything from baby-wearing to cloth diapering. Speakers, workshops and shopping were also on the agenda and even though I thought it would make this pregnant mom exhausted making it to all the events that day, I was excited and open to learn and do meet and greets. Yes, babies were quite welcome!
One of the biggest things that I took away from the conference was the focus of the motherhood community. We are inundated with products and ideas; baby carriers, cloth diapering, car seat safety – yet we don’t really have a handle on the live demonstration side of our baby shower goods besides a few pieces of instructions and good intentions. In sessions set up for the safety of informal Q&As, topics like ‘Birth Without Fear’ and ‘Sex After Baby’ (which was hosted by the awesome blogger, The Leaky Boob) provided easy ways for new moms to get real information right from the source. Not all moms have a built-in mommy community and MommyCon is proof that women (and the many dads in attendance) want to reach out and take an active role in what they seem to do best – communicate! What more important topic for a conference for women than on motherhood in the modern times?
One of the sessions I was most excited about attending was the one on Babywearing. The MommyCon session included a Babywearing Lounge presented by the biggest manufacturers of baby carriers, Ergobaby and Beco. It was an awesome event for parents like me who need a new carrier and one that is ‘manly’enough that my SAHD husband feels comfortable carrying our little daughter around while our preschooler is being a, well, preschooler. While there were so many options and I suggest parents look at each one carefully based on their needs, I fell in love with the Ergobaby Organic Collection Baby Carrier in black after going to the Ergobaby booth. It’s comfortable for both men and women with an ergonomically-correct design as weight is evenly distributed between hips and shoulders. Babies can be in a natural sitting position and can actually be carried in three different positions of front, hip and back. It was an awesome experience to be able to try out many different types of carriers and to fall in love with one that fits in perfectly with our family.
While I still dream of a ParentCon Austin (my husband is, after all, a stay-at-home dad that could have certainly benefited from this before he took on parenthood), I am still appreciative of the parenting community topic stressed in this conference as MommyCon did reach out to many local organizations (see my picture of the Monkey Mat booth?). Moms could not beat the safety aspects of learning how to use baby product gear properly and there was even a session on schooling from pre-K to choosing the right form of school for your family from home schooling or doing public or private. I believe MommyCon does fill a need of real connection between new parents in modern times. Moms especially have a hard role to fill in being a caregiver, employee, being present and a wanting to take care of our children’s future including the best ways to take care of our planet with the increasingly convenient throw-away lifestyle and technology. I know as a working mom, I struggle with the thought that I am doing things right even as my child is thriving. If real live non-internet support has to come in the form of a forty-five dollar ticket for those personal conversations and baby product demonstrations to make it work for me – so be it. Oh, the gift samples bag wasn’t too shabby, either.
Bring on babyhood, Austin Mommas! I am ready for my final go-around with even more Austin connections in my smartphone. I will be calling!
