Product Review: Can You Canoe? CD/DVD Combo by The Okee Dokee Brothers (All Ages) *Grammy Winner*
A Mississippi River Adventure Album
River songs for kids? One word: Awesome. We used the term ‘river rat’ for those folks who grew up along the banks of the Ohio and Muskingum rivers where I grew up and I have to consider myself among those who spent more summers wet than dry. When I moved to the edge of West Virginia, I never looked back at a public pool. I spent summers swimming, tubing (which you could get for free from a local tire company) and jumping off abandoned bridges and rope swings into any watering hole and river I could find. I feel at home beside waterways and even the terrible floods my city endured (2005 and 2006 were terrible years for that area and never fully recovered) never deterred my love of water. The Okee Dokee Brothers children’s music centers around nature and the love of the outdoors and their latest GRAMMY nominated CD/DVD combo entitled Can You Canoe? fits the ticket for my family.
Can You Canoe? CD/DVD Combo by The Okee Dokee Brothers is a must have CD for the nature and music loving family. I read one review that said this CD was like a love letter to nature and I couldn’t agree more. Plus any album that teaches kids to spell Mississippi forwards and backwards is great in my book! My Ohio River friends will love the song ‘The Boatman’s Dance’ that talks about my most favorite river. All songs are written by the Okee Dokee Brothers, but they reference so many traditional songs that I feel like I knew this album before I heard it all the way through. I also love their nod to Chubby Parker’s ‘King Kong Kitchie Kitchie Ki-Me-O’ which my mom would play for me as a child! The lovely Elizabeth Mitchell (also up for a Grammy) sings on Track 14, which I was happy to hear. I am including the link to the CD and DVD combo because I think it adds so much to this album and it is fun to see ‘live’ music from Justin and Joe (aka Okee Dokee Brothers real names) on the DVD. Digital downloads are also available. Highly recommended!
