Have you ever heard of the Christmas Truce, the true story that happened during World War I? The often bloody and violent war of WWI made an interesting turn the night of Christmas Eve night in 1914. In the area of ‘No Man’s Land’ with British soldiers battling their German enemies on the other side there came a calming Christmas carol being sung in German piercing the deafening silence. When the song was complete, the British soldiers began to sing “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.” Carols began being sung back and forth in the trenches of No Man’s Land until one brave man comes up from the darkness with a small Christmas tree with lighted candles and the soldiers leave their trenches to stand together in the open field. Although this was only a brief moment of solace during this terrible war, it is said that as many as 100,000 soldiers may have stopped the fighting, if only for a few hours, to participate in these unofficial truces. This story tells of a deep human connection we all share even during times of terrible conflict which questions the very sacrifice of human life during war. This is a touching story of the spirit of the holidays and, while the pain and suffering is glossed over as this is a children’s story, the impact of the war and all the lives lost is not lost on this one night that both sides came together to celebrate Christmas. Included in each book is a CD that features a reading of the story as well as the recordings of “Silent Night” and “Christmas in the Trenches”. Powerful stuff!
