Product Review:  The Twelve Days of Christmas {Hardcover} (All Ages)

On the First Day of Christmas My True Love Gave to Me…..

For some reason ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’ was a song we reserved for my great-grandma Dove’s house.  Each year until she passed our family spent Christmas Eve at her place in Licking County, Ohio on her farm (where I learned about the horrors of roosters) and my dad always did the part of the song of the ‘two turtle doves’ (complete with actions).  My great-grandma passed away when I was eleven so I remember that first Christmas we didn’t go to the Dove farm and it was very sad.  It was like a rite of passage to be included in that large family song.  Cousins, uncles and relatives I barely knew gathered once a year on that farm and we sang the heck out of that song.  I don’t know if we could ever do that song justice like we did when I was a child, but it was so nice to sing the book to Brooke (you really can’t ‘read’ the book, right?).

The Twelve Days of Christmas is what those familiar with the traditional English carol would expect out of this children’s book.  The illustrations are fun and lighthearted with a lot of colorful animals dancing to the song.  I didn’t realize how much counting goes on beyond the number one through twelve.  The song introduces ordinal numbers like first, second and third for kids to learn.  The book is like a familiar friend that you want your family to meet.  It’s a beautiful way to start the Christmas season and a nice way to introduce a tradition to your child.  It doesn’t hurt that the illustrator is from Medina, Ohio, too.  Yeah!
