I never believed in Santa Claus. My mother may be silly, whimsical and a hippie in her own right, but she drew the line at what she thought was ‘lying to us kids’. She was also quick to tell us to not ruin it for other kids, so while my friends went on and on about Santa I would sit there and politely listen while knowing it was not real. While I don’t feel like I really missed out, there was an understanding from an early age that the reason we couldn’t get certain toys was not because Santa didn’t think we deserved them, it was because our family couldn’t afford them. I suppose that isn’t a bad lesson to learn, but I like to play make believe and I want Christmas to be a magical fun time for Brooke where pretending to leave cookies for a fake fat jolly man in a red suit who slides down a chimney with his reindeer can be part of the fun of pretend. In some ways, I am glad my mom never lied to me but in some ways I think you can have it both ways. Kids like to pretend so let’s pretend without saying it is ‘real’ will be our approach. She can be in on ‘the secret’ later but let’s have fun pretending for the season.
