CARES Airplane Safety Harness for Children.  The Only Easy, FAA-approved way for Small Children to Fly Safe.

I saw a product that intrigued me and I wanted to know more about safety air travel for kids.  I’ve mentioned before, I was almost an adult the first time I flew and the long ride to London in less than stellar conditions made me think that was my last time on earth.  Hey, I had no idea what turbulence was…no one explained it to me and I never asked…..Oops…  Of course, I’ve flown probably a hundred times since that day and even though I have the entire opening flight attendant safety speech memorized, I can’t help but silently roll my eyes.  I mean, if that plane goes down, I don’t think a floatation device is going to help me bounce back.  You with me here?  But, of course, that was just my story, and like most people that blindly agree without facts, I was WRONG.  It is nice to have people inform you, like Margaret A. Zukas, Product Manager of Kids Fly Safe why, in fact, you are WRONG!  For instance, if you know that the National Transportation Safety Board determined if parents had to buy an extra seat on a plane, they would rather drive and so child restraints on planes have never been mandatory.  Yeah, you know that 8-point harness thing that has been grilled into your head by everyone and your mother that your child must wear on the road?  Well, that does not happen in planes, my friends.  Did you ever wonder why child restraints in vehicles have shown over and over again that regular car seat belts do not protect children in the case of an accident?  Because it is true.  Why is this so important?  Well, if you were like me, I get it.  A plane goes down, it’s not like a season of Lost where there are multiple survivors, right?  Well, like all good statisticians, Margaret was quick to point to the FAA’s own website and school me on some interesting facts.  For example, a huge misconception about flying is that an “incident” is “we’re all going to die anyway”, which isn’t the case.  Really?  Tell me more, Margaret…

  • 77% of all aircraft accidents are survivable
  • 85% of all accidents occur during takeoff and landing

CARES – Child Safety Harness‏ for Air Travel is to safely buckle children for kids in the weight range of 22-44 lbs and up to 40″ tall in an airplane.  Now to the CARES kit?  Why is it so great?  Well, we can point to a manufacturer that is exclusively AmSafe considered the foremost and safest manufacturer of aviation seatbelts and pilot restraints in the world.  Check.  CARES weighs just one pound and fits into a 6″ stuff sack.  Check!  It is so portable and easy to install and adjusts to EVERY size of airplane seat.  Check and Check.  The big thing for me is that the FAA approves it and while not mandatory, products like this give me peace of mind and sometimes you just can’t put a price on that.  Check and Check!  Ok, I am convinced, so where do I sign up?
