Product Review: Shape the World Game (Age 9+)
Award Winning Intergenerational Fun
Like many families with visions of that white picket fence and a nice retirement, our family’s hard work came crashing down in 2008 after my husband’s unexpected layoff. We still struggle today, but with my ever increasing responsibilities and pay at work and my husband’s awesome stay-at-home dad status (who is also now a full-time student- yeah!), we are working hard to show our daughter that little setbacks in life won’t keep us down. In fact, they make us stronger. When I heard Nancy VanDeVelde’s story (and this was after I learned about their cool family game) about creating a quality game for families to enjoy has been relying on small markets and businesses who have since closed their doors due to tough economics times that she is now throwing around the idea to no longer produce more games after this last run. No! These are the types of products I like to champion. Not only is this an awesome, educational and fun game (which can be modified for younger children!), it was also created by Nancy’s son, Nathan, who was just 11 years old at the time. Very cool!
Shape the World Game is an award-winning luck game of shapes and numbers (and a little imagination with drawing) that goes as fast as twenty minutes! Let me start by saying that you really don’t need drawing skills to play, which makes it so much fun. Each player (you can have up to SIX) gets one dry erase sheet, one dry erase marker, one eraser and seven playing cards. You have one minute to make categories, use shapes, judge drawing and keep score with the highest number winning. It’s such a fast paced game that everyone in the family will want to join in and laugh at the fun. As Nancy says, ‘that is what shaping the world is about for us!’ Love!
