Frederic Ogden Nash (1902-1971) was a New Yorker and American poet and lyricist. One of his greatest poems was called the”Carnival of Animals” which was printed in The New Yorker 25/48 a few weeks after Christmas in 1950. The name of his poem was not by accident. In fact, it was a tribute to The Carnival of the Animals (Le carnaval des animaux), a funny musical suite that included fourteen movements by the French composer Camille Saint-Saëns. Saint-Saëns composed this suite in February 1886 and it is scored for two pianos, two violins, viola, cello, double bass, flute (and piccolo), clarinet, glass harmonica, and xylophone. Nash’s versus are considered a children’s timeless classic as well as being set to music by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. With almost 70 minutes of classic music set to verse, your child will also delight in the 24-page booklet with the complete set of Nash’s verses with pictures by the famous children’s illustrator, Anne Wilsdorf.
