Fun with a Purpose.

I looked forward to going to my dad’s mother’s house (we called her ‘Smootchy Grandma’ because she always said, “Give Grandma a SMOOTCH”) so that I could shift through her copy of Highlights magazines.  My grandma is a sweetheart and someone you think of when you think of a sweet grandma, but she did not spend a ton of time with us kids since she felt we should be out exploring in the woods, reading kid’s books and getting lost outside playing on their really cool farm lands in south eastern Ohio.  My grandma’s monthly subscription of Highlights was actually for my father’s younger sister who still lived at home at the time when I was young and I was hooked at going through each page of the magazine.  I anxiously awaited the adventures of Goofus and Gallant, The Timbertoes family stories, the matching games, the craft ideas and, of course (my favorite) the hidden puzzles.  The educational model and fun with a purpose makes it a popular magazine even to this day since its inaugural issue in June 1946.  Wow!

The Highlights Hidden Pictures 2012 4-Book Set is a brand-new concept series of taking the beloved Hidden Pictures segments from the Highlights magazines and putting them into a complete book.  I think that is pure genius.  It gets the creative juices flowing for children as young as two and similar concept books like ‘I Spy’ have been a staple in our household.  This is a great hide-and-seek game on paper and there are even some challenging activities for the four and up crowd (which we love to do together with Brooke).  It really does help with concentration, attention to detail as well as building visual and language skills.  No wonder why the Hidden Pictures was always such a big hit with kids!

About Highlights:  Highlights was the product of a lifetime of education and learning publication of experience from Garry and Caroline Myers.  They created Highlights in 1946 their home state of Pennsylvania.  While their first issue had a modest print run of 20,000 copies, by the time they celebrated their company’s 60th birthday, they had printed their one-billionth copy of the magazine hot off the presses.  If you have never taken the opportunity to learn about this slice of Americana educational history of the Highlights Magazine, I encourage you to check out their products section of their website to learn more.

Wholesome fun dedicated to helping children grow in basic skills and knowledge in the ability to think and reason in high ideals and worthy ways of living
