A Round-the-World Counting Rhyme

We had a very interesting indoor weekend-only ‘flea market’ where I grew up that was like stepping into another world.  It was a combination of yard sales and Dollar Stores and you could find anything from incense to African shields.  I was able to amass a lot of my vinyl record collection as a kid by digging through the old bins and I even found several old Beatles records in mint condition jammed into weird sleeves like the Bee Gees.  Lucky day!  It was just another strange and interesting find at this local ‘market’.  While I read this book to my daughter, I kept thinking about this flea market of my youth with a giggle.  I guess that is where your mind goes when you read a book to your child about a granny who takes a magic carpet ride to different markets around the world!

My Granny Went to Market is a delightful book about a granny who buys a flying carpet from a man in Istanbul.  She takes her flying carpet and flies around the world picking up different interesting purchases from around the globe.  This is a counting book, so each time Granny makes a purchase she ups the ante by one additional item with reinforced number learning.  Three masks from Mexico, four paper lanterns from China, five cowbells from Switzerland, etc, etc…  This is an unforgettable shopping trip, so the readers need to hold on tight.  Granny is also generous with her purchases with the items being turned to gifts and her grandchild gets to start on her own magical journey on that carpet from Istanbul.
