Product Review: I Miss My Pet {Softcover – First Look Series} (Age 4-8)
A First Look at When a Pet Dies.
I still miss ‘my’ very first cat Marigold who I was lucky enough to adopt from a farm in the sticks of Ohio into our family the summer before second grade. His hair was the color of the marigold flowers we planted around our garden (did you catch that activity from the Root View Farm review? If so, good for you! You were paying attention!) to keep the animals away and I thought he was the most beautiful animal I had ever seen. We became fast friends and he would follow me everywhere including to bed where he would lull me to sleep with his loud purrs. He lived a long time for a cat, around twenty years, but it still makes me a little sad to think about losing the animal who wanted nothing from me but a nice rub on the back and some food. Yes, I still miss him and I feel a little misty-eyed typing this. I know that it is inevitable that our three older cats will pass away and our daughter will have to deal with that loss. I always look to books to help me say the right thing in the moment and I found it in this book.
I Miss My Pet book was written by an experienced psychotherapist and counselor to help parents talk on a level that is always understandable to younger children after the loss of a pet. The pictures are comforting as is the explanation of death. I love the two-page How to Use This Book section for parents that discusses that sadness is the first step to emotional healing and how to promote these positive interactions with your child during their time of sadness. I am very happy to have this tool and although I hope to never have to use it, I am afraid that the truth is there will probably come a day when it will happen. I just hope to make it meaningful and insightful for our whole family so we can heal and move forward – together.
