Product Review: A Laurie Berkner Christmas CD (All Ages)

I am a bit of a sucker for Christmas and holiday music. I like making egg nog, smelling cinnamon and pine and putting on some great vinyl Christmas tunes while feeling the chill in the air. Although I’m in Texas now and snow is a rarity, I really only miss it on the holidays. The music of the season remains the constant and very special occasion to my family. While we have our old favorite Christmas albums, like Burl Ives and Dean Martin, we always add a few new holiday albums in rotation each year. Last year, we were given some old Willie Nelson records including a Christmas album (thanks, Granny!) and this year we are adding A Laurie Berner Christmas to the collection. Who is Laurie Berner? She is a children’s musician since her 1997 release of Whaddaya Think Of That? I love that Laurie took the traditional Christmas classics and made them her own. This album also includes three original pieces, “Santa’s Coming To My House Tonight,” “Candy Cane Jane” and “Christmas Lights.” Brooke’s favorite is Laurie’s spin on “Jingle Bells” (she is quite obsessed with that song right now). It’s a great way to start the holiday season and begin the joy and cheer of this time of year that is captured in song.

For those who don’t know Laurie, she is a former preschool music teacher who became an indie rocker extraordinaire at night. She began selling her music over ten years ago on her own independent label, Two Tomatoes Records. Interestingly, Laurie was the first artist to appear in music videos on Nick Jr. and is frequently featured in episodes of the channel’s Jack’s Big Music Show. Very cool!
