Product Review: Magnetic Poetry Kids First Words Set (Age 4+)
Big Sized Word Magnets to Help Kids Develop a Love of Language!
The first time I saw these Magnetic Poetry Word Kits was in college in our rental house filled with students (mostly NOT on the lease) and the words weren’t exactly child-friendly. It was a fun way to leave messages to each other or just leave goofy poetry or weird strung together sentences that did not make a whole lot of sense but would still get laughs. I was definitely not surprised to see that they are selling a kid’s version of first words because it does give children a lot of interaction with words whether it’s on the refrigerator or a magnetic board and helps with sight language learning. We definitely love this set.
This award-winning set was created by teachers and parents based on the ‘sight words’ principle from the 1948 book by Dr. Edward William Dolch entitled Problems in Reading. This principle is that first words are words that kids recognize based on sight not on sounding them out. As with many words in the English language, many are used over and over and while not all can be phonetically sounded out it is also based on repetition. Common words that can not be sounded out phonetically such as what or can are illustrated to add a visual cue to the learning process and are said to make up over 50% of our reading materials. Wow! Learning sight words is a great step in the construction of a child’s ability to read and the poetry word sets include 140 sight words (Dolch’s original list included 220!) that are large and easy for small fingers to manipulate. Tile words are .75” tall and re-usable packaging. Don’t forget to check out their entire list of magnetic sets, including ones for design work and for the holidays!
