101 Ways for your Young Child to Enjoy Independent Fun under the Sun

Are we raising our kids to be “nature-deficit”?  If your child is seeing more Sponge Bob than trees and hiking trails, this is the perfect book for your family.  This book includes 101 fresh ideas to play creatively outdoors.  The promise is that each activity takes less than five minutes of prep time to create some fun independent outdoor play to create an excitement and exploration with nature.  This is not just outdoor play in the summer months, oh no, it includes activities broken down into each season including winter.  Although we don’t get a lot of snow here in Austin, it does get cold and many of the winter activities would work well in our climate.  I also like that while there is an emphasis on independent outdoor play, there are lots of suggestions for parents to get involved in their child’s play outside, especially for younger children.  It’s important that we, as humans, get out and experience the wind in our hair and the sun (on our sun screened) faces.  Yes, I spend most of my work days and night hours behind a computer desk, but wow, I sure hope that Brooke can spend more of her life getting out and excited about the world outside of these four walls.  Let’s get out there and get moving and show our kids it’s about time we went and played outside.
