One of the best days of my seventh grade year (I was the ‘bird legs’ weirdo with 3 different colors in her hair – remember her?) was when my history teacher decided we were going to ‘excavate’ an area beside the soccer/baseball/football field. We were to dig up artifacts and each section was roped off properly as if we were real archaeologists. It was definitely my favorite activity the entire year and I was so excited when I found bits and pieces of pottery and bone. Now that’s how a science class should go! It is amazing to think that underneath the ground there are still many mysteries and secrets that have yet to be discovered and it is fun to bring that excitement of a dig to children. Hey, I knew the dig was ‘fixed’ in seventh grade, but I didn’t care because that is what imagination does for a child.
