I grew up in SE Ohio and my family has been through their share of blizzards.  My older brother was born during the infamous blizzard of 1978.  One year as a kid I got stuck at a friend’s house out in the country during a blizzard until my dad braved the snow to come and get me.  It probably wasn’t the smartest thing to do when I think about it but I was relieved to finally get home at the time.  Another year when I was going to college and worked at a local deli in a small town where jobs were hard to come by I was told to come into work and drive in a level two emergency snow storm (that later became a level three emergency snow storm) or I would lose my job.  The owner insisted I had to come in and (stupid me) I drove my little broken down Geo Prizm not really knowing if I was on the road or not (yes, I will NEVER do that again for any job, sorry – safety first!).  Turns out they ended up closing up the store a few hours later when we were strongly encouraged to by the city.  Blizzards are not fun and they are dangerous to be out on the road in those terrible conditions.  However, Blizzards in a Bucket is a completely different and FUN blizzard.  Since we live in Texas, my daughter has never seen a real snow storm just a few flurries one day that did not even stick.  If I can’t bring her to the snow, let me bring the snow to her!

Blizzard in a Bucket is just what it says it is….home-grown snow in your own little bucket.  All you do is add a scoop of the substance into the bucket, add some water and –presto- snow appears!  The Insta-Snow actually expands 100 times its original size right before your eyes!  It is quite amazing.  The kit also comes with lots of fun activities and scientific experiments that you can do with your Blizzard in a Bucket.  You can make real snowballs, learn to do snow magic tricks and even create a rainbow with your snow.  There is also information so we can become ‘Snow Smart’.  Why is snow white? Are all snowflakes really different?  You can find out with this kit!  Blizzard in a Bucket is a great way to explore fun ideas about snow for our youngest scientists.  We have had a blast using this kit and since you can measure out scoops at a time, we’ve been able to have lots of fun ‘snow sessions’ and talk about snowmen and about real snow and weather.  So, the question is, does this count as Brooke finally getting to see and play with snow?  I’d like to think so!
