We spent a lot of Thanksgivings in Perry County, Ohio.  If you have never heard of Perry County, Ohio I wouldn’t fault you.  The entire county has around 36,000 people and my father’s family is probably related to most of them.  At least, that is my guess.  I assume it is pretty traditional as most Americans would think of as Thanksgiving.  There was a turkey, pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes and this concoction we kids always loved that was called ‘Slush’ which was some ginger ale mixed with frozen lemonade and orange juice drink we always waited for with great anticipation.  My Aunt Tisha was always the one who would make it for us and she was a favorite aunt who never tired of our boring kid stories or crazy antics.  We usually would walk the ground to the pond and sometimes even row out in the middle of it and just relax.  It was nice.  That is how I remember Thanksgiving.

First up, All About Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving is a United States holiday that is always observed on the fourth Thursday in November that celebrates the harvest of the Pilgrims from the first anniversary in 1621.  Interestingly, it was not celebrated as a tradition until 1863 when the celebration of the feast and the reason that the Pilgrims gave thanks after surviving the hard brutal winter in 1621 became a family holiday.  If you can imagine celebrating a Thanksgiving feast for three whole days, then you can imagine how important that harvest was for both the Pilgrims and the Wamoanoag Native Americans who helped the Pilgrims learn how to harvest the land.  While turkey is the feast of today, the very first Thanksgiving meals consisted of fowl, venison, fish, lobster, clams, berries, fruit, pumpkin, and squash.

Thanksgiving is a fun early reader for small children, which means there are just a few repeating words with lots of fun pictures of cartoon turkeys being silly (also a nice 1-5 number theme), with a Thanksgiving-theme.  This is a great simple read to help build confidence in early readers.  Don’t forget to check out the free educator’s guide for some fun activities!
