Product Review: I Have Two Homes [Hardcover] (Age 5+)
A tender, honest, and reassuring story for children about divorce
My husband is a child of divorce at the ripe old age of six and I have seen some of the difficulties from the experience that carried on well into his teen years since it was not an amicable split for years. I was born at a time when the American marriage was a coin toss as to whether it would make it to ‘the end’ and most of my friends in high school were from divorced homes. Although Bob and I never plan to divorce (we are both very committed and stubborn on that one! ha ha) I imagine even under the best circumstances, divorce is not easy on a child and I was on the lookout for a gentle book that would offer encouragement to those children going through the process. Divorce is so common and I feel that we seem to brush aside this as a normal process when, in fact, it can be quite traumatic for little ones who do not have the emotional maturity to fully understand why parents split up and when the feelings from all parties involved are not explained. I feel very fortunate to have run across this book by Marian De Smet and her lovely story of Nina as she shares her process of having two homes.
I have Two Homes is a story of young Nina who talks about her parents’ divorce in a wistful yet matter-of-fact way that is also very hopeful for readers. She shares how her life was before her parents’ divorce and how things are now. Some things are the same while others are quite different although it’s not that bad, in fact, at times, it is quite good. This is refreshingly told from a child’s perspective and while it does not sugar coat the pain Nina does feel when her parents separate, it does show there is happiness for her after the divorce.
