Haiku (pronounced “hi KOO”) is a form of poetry with three lines with specific syllables on each line. Line one contains five, line two contains seven and line three contains five syllables. Traditional haiku dates back to eighteenth century Japan and is usually focused on nature so The Year Comes Round is a perfect example of a book of traditional haiku about the changing of the seasons for an entire year.
If you want to give your child a great introduction to haiku, this is a great way to discuss this form of poetry through twelve nature themes that take the reader through the calendar from January until December. Considered a quiet contemplation of nature throughout the year, this is a Caldecott Honor book that will not disappoint. It nicely ties in the seasons with the weather and animals while explaining the beauty of the year as a whole. There is a wonderful section in the back of the book that discusses the cycle of life and goes more into depth about each of the four seasons we experience. It is such a refreshing book on nature perfect for any season.
