Product Review: Maccabee Meals – Food and Fun for Hanukkah {softcover} (Geared for Ages 7-12)
A Growing Jewish Library for Children
It is no secret our family loves food and Jewish meals are a love of mine, especially around Hanukkah. I was very sad when the Jewish deli a few miles from us closed down because it is hard to find yummy Matzah Ball Soup unless you make it yourself (which we do). You don’t have to be Jewish (case in point, our family!) to love this food and this wonderful kid’s book on Hanukkah meals is great. If you have never tried traditional latkes, you are definitely missing out!
Maccabee Meals: Food and Fun for Hanukkah is a great cookbook for the Hanukkah season. The book is indexed in the following categories; latkes, desserts and sweets, main dishes, drinks and sides. I like that the book contains lots of facts and history about the meals and about Hanukkah, the Jewish celebration of lights that began with a victory by the Jewish fighters called the Maccabees. The meals are broken down into degrees of difficulty, with three dreidel meals being the most difficult and require adult supervision to ones that can be done with a dull knife. The back of the book also has some fun and interesting pages like how to play the dreidel and some table crafts and party etiquette.
When does Hanukkah begin? For this year, Hanukkah begins in the evening of Saturday, December 8, 2012, and ends in the evening of Sunday, December 16, 2012. Every 38 years, Christmas Day and Hanukkah coincide and it will happen again in 2016!
