Explore Rocks and Minerals! 20 Projects, Activities, Experiments

Brooke loves rocks.  She likes to play in them, bring them inside and keep them as ‘pets’.  Her first rock she fell in love with was a tan color and was shaped like a rectangle.  She named him ‘Pickle’ and she likes to wash him and make him ‘smell good’ each night.  Pickle has multiplied and her rock collection is getting a little out of hand.  I don’t necessarily like three large rocks hanging out in our bathroom, but what can you do?  She loves rocks and a book on the subject sounded like a perfect read for a potential budding geologist.

Explore Rocks and Minerals is part of the ‘Explore Your World’ series from Nomad Press.  The book has in depth explanations of how minerals form and different experiments you can do like making crystals and testing minerals.  The projects are simple and inexpensive and some of the tests involve food, so that was a plus with us (volcanic meringue cookies anyone?).  The nice illustrations and text are guided by a cartoon mole wearing a hard hat.  I found a lot of the sidebar tidbits to be interesting and the technical steps are easily broken down.  I think this would be a great homeschooling tool for Earth Science or just a fun activity book to do together as family fun.  It has been many years since I have discussed igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks and it was a blast.  You really can’t go wrong if you are looking for a factual book for children as young as six in the world of geology.

Check it out!  Nomad Press has an entire ‘Explore’ Series.  Austinites may be interested in the Explore Rivers and Ponds! title which focuses on the world of water and conservation efforts with 25 great experiments to explore.
