Product Review: I Can Do It Myself! [Hardcover] (Toddler +)

I think that all parents with preschoolers will love this book! Like most parents with young children who are not quite old enough to be considered independent but old enough to want to make their own decisions, the words, “I can do it myself!” is a constant expression in the household. I hear, “No, mommy, I can brush my teeth”…..while I as a parent watch anxiously as my child chews on the brush bristles barely touching the potential plaque areas. “No mommy, I want to drink out of a big cup”…..while pouring sticky juice or milk all over the floor as it dribbles down her chin. At the age of toddlers and preschoolers, their confidence does outweigh their competence, but that’s just par for the course. You can’t really let your children learn without stepping back and letting them make their mistakes and the nail biting that ensues should be looked at as a badge of honor to say you are doing your job right by letting them try things out and figure out their place in the world.
I Can Do It Myself! is a book about preschooler Emily Pearl who thinks she is a big girl who can do big girl things all by herself. This fun and very realistic take on the ups and downs of being a determined child is brilliantly done in a fun rhyming scheme perfect for young children. She can take care of her fish and make herself lunch and even tie her shoes, so why would her mother always want to try and help? I read one helpful review that said by inserting her own child’s name with the character of Emily in the book proved to be a fun and effective read for her preschooler and helped her realize that her child’s determination comes out of a want for independence and not just to frustrate you as a parent. Hilarious insight, momma!
Inside Scoop! Peachtree Publishers filled me in that the Emily Pearl character, now in school, will be featured in an upcoming new book in their fall catalog called I Want to Help! It should be a fantastic book for Age 5+!
