I will let you in on a little secret.  I would like to live on a small acre of land with my small family close to Wayne National Forest (possibly Athens County Ohio) where I could grow my own food and live off the land.  Oh, and with internet connection.  That, my friends, is my dream.  Nothing fancy, nothing big.  I don’t need a big house, a new car or new clothes.  I would like my own little plot of land to grow food and to not have to go to a normal job every day and just live with some amount of freedom (you know, as much as you can while paying taxes and dealing with other constraints).  There is something about being self sufficient that speaks to me.  I have no idea how possible it is to be self sufficient in our day-to-day lives in this day and age, but that is why they call them dreams.  What doesn’t have to be a dream is learning how to grow food and enjoying the ‘fruits’ of your labor.  Austin has some great Community Gardens for those of us who don’t have our own land and there are also plants you can grow (tomatoes are a great example) right inside your home!  I love that there is a book out there for kids who may not have access to grow food on their own land to learn more about Community Gardens and the book We Grew It – Let’s Eat It! does just that.

We Grew It – Let’s Eat It! is about two twins from Washington, D.C., Annie and Veda, who want to grow food in a Community Garden after learning about the White House veggie garden.  This colorful 50-page book with lots of full page pictures is wonderful to see and read to kids about working (and playing, of course!) in their Community Garden and learning how to plant, tend and harvest their own food.  Of course, the most fun of growing your own food is in the preparation and eating it!  Yummy!  What a fantastic read and the icing on the cake is that it comes with healthy recipes simple enough for children to prepare as well as additional reading on gardening.  Perhaps one day my dream of having my own garden will happen, but until then my family can still enjoy growing and eating our own food in our own way.

“So, in the two sides of thinking about writing — how it comes into being, and who the audience is — the Press was an inspiration.”   — Hermione Lee. Virginia Woolf.
