Quick question:  Did Christopher Columbus ever set foot on the continental United States?  The answer?  No.  We all know the Italian explorer commissioned by Spain went sailing to the east in search of riches in spices and silks in 1492.  However, out of his four voyages, the closest he got to present day US territories were St. Croix and Puerto Rico.   The real reason Columbus called the people from Bahamas ‘Indians’ was because he thought he landed on the Spice Islands near India.  Pretty interesting when we think about how we Americans celebrate Columbus as the founder of our country!  It wasn’t until the English pilgrims made their way to America on the Mayflower in 1620 seeking religion of freedom that the first non-native American culture was born.

Colonial Kids: An Activity Guide to Life in the New World is the tale and activity book of children living in the colonial times in America roughly 100 hundred years after the first pilgrims settled in the United States.   Life was tough and dangerous and kids spent a great deal of time doing household chores and helping with the family.  There are over 75 different activities to choose from in this book and while some are a little less authentic than others (using instant cocoa mix, for example, for hot chocolate), you and your child will get a very good picture of how life was like for the Colonial Kids.  Highly recommended!
