Growing up in a spread out village with less than 1,600 people in rural Southeastern Ohio had some advantages when it came to exploring the caverns and caves in my own backyard of this mountainous region. Alone. I recently explained to one of our good friends of how I would stand on the edge of a cavern and look down into the valley below and just be amazed at what a long fall it would be if I happened to slip. Getting ‘lost’ in the wilderness and hiking for what seemed like miles upon miles through trees and rocks and finding little watering holes to swim was a relief and the solace sitting inside a cavern rock was like a thoughtful meditation for a young child with a lot on her mind. It almost makes me sad to think Brooke is not surrounded by the beauty that is the seclusion of the Hocking Hills and Wayne National Forest. Do children these days not get to experience the loveliness of the outdoors as I did?
My First Hike, another fabulous book by Dawn Publishing, is about a reluctant child’s desire to go on a nature hike (his very FIRST nature hike) with his grandpa. To the child’s surprise the great outdoors is not a chore to appease grandpa, it is a discovery and surprise of the wonderful world of nature. Animals like birds and frogs come alive and there are trees to swing from and waterfalls to swim under. The best part comes at the end when the child innocently looks at his grandpa and simply asks, “Can we come back tomorrow?” Love, love, love this book!
