Product Review: Wonderful Life with the Elements (Age 10+)
The Periodic Table Personified
So, as promised, here is a friendly book review about the elements and I am here to deliver! If you have never heard of the Japanese graphic artist, Bunpei Yorifuji, you are in for a real treat. I first saw his design work online years ago when he came out with the Earthquake Manual. He uniquely put together a manual with tips and strategies with input of survivors of the Hanshin earthquake of 1995. It was his quirky illustrations that made it so distinct and memorable. Well, I’m here to tell you that Bunpei has done a superb job of putting his own spin on what No Starch Press is calling the ‘super’ periodic table.
Wonderful Life with the Elements is a fact-based look at the periodic table but with a fun twist. Each element comes to life through Bunpei’s drawings of each element that becomes an interesting character you probably won’t forget. For example, man-made elements are robots (get it? heh). Besides the brilliant drawings, you will find the element’s discovery date and really interesting facts that tell you why the element is so important. For example, did you know there are over 10,000,000 different naturally occurring carbon compounds? I love the section of element friends and how to ‘eat’ the elements. Brilliant! Plus, elements that have afros are just, well, cool. I so wish I had a copy of this during my school years! Well done.
Here are the five fun chapters!
Chapter 1: Elements in the Living Room
Chapter 2: The Super Periodic Table of the Elements
Chapter 3: Element Cartoon Characters
