Artful First Colors Book Introduces Children to 9 Basic Colors and 20 Shades

This is such a brilliant book to start the youngest of children on a sense of shade and color articulation that I think is fantastic.  Leave it to the art-centric Abrams books to come out with a board book for kids on the Pantone Matching System!  For those who don’t know, the Pantone Matching System by Pantone, Inc. (a New Jersey company) was a revolutionary tool in the graphic arts industry that started in 1963 to enable designers and printers to articulate specific colors worldwide by using this system.  It has become a global standard and is used throughout the globe for color naming and matching (think apparel, accessories, arts and crafts, stationery and office supplies, home furnishings, etc…).  Interestingly, this system was started by recent college graduate and part time employee with chemistry knowledge, Lawrence Herbert, who in the 1950s began to systemize the printing company’s stock of pigments and inks.  (On a side note:  Herbert went on to buy the company, so hey, let that be a lesson to those employers with young employees!  They could be your boss one day!)  So, yes, a color can be Blue Iris or Chili Pepper thanks to the Pantone, Inc.  Now thanks to Abrams Books, your infant can start seeing and learning these shades from the beginning!  The board book focuses on nine of the basic colors with a cute image on one page and then twenty shades for each color on the opposite page.  Although young children begin by naming colors based on the monochromatic images, they can very quickly start learning about shades and expanding their color knowledge. How fashionable!
