DIY Russian Nesting Dolls
It’s the little things you don’t know about your parents that can surprise you when you get older. I had no idea my mother had always wanted a set of the Russian Nesting Dolls (aka Matryoshka dolls) which got me into these collectables. Nesting dolls, in case you don’t know, refers to a set of wooden dolls of decreasing size that are placed one inside the other. They were first created in 1890 by a folk crafts painter from Russia and are traditionally made with women dressed in a sarafan, a Russian peasant dress. These days you can find many different styles of the dolls and I bought my mom, another cat lover, a set of Cat Russian Nesting Dolls a few years back once I learned of her desire for a set. I recently discovered a company that not only makes complete Russian nesting dolls, they also make Do It Yourself kits where you can paint faces and clothes on the dolls. As I am a ‘lazy crafter’ I decided we should test out the unpainted Volga Maiden Doll set where the face and clothes outlines are on the dolls with the only ‘crafty’ part being the painting. Hurrah!
The Unpainted Volga Maiden Nesting Dolls 5 piece set has made ‘creating’ your own nesting dolls so much easier! Golden Cockerel has started the project by drawing the outlines of the doll faces and dress on the unfinished wood and all we need to do is paint it or use markers to color the dolls! For an even easier project, the company offers separate sticker artwork designed specifically for the dolls. As the company says, this is the perfect craft projects for kids (and moms!) who like a little creative guidance. Brilliant!
